David Paich, the keyboardist was a regular session musician for artists such as the Eagles, Larry Carlton and Quincy Jones.
In the years following Toto's debut album band struggled to create a successful sound and experienced numerous changes of members. In the end, Hungate left the band in 1980 to pursue his own career in Nashville. He left the band due to a lack of time for his family, as well as an increase in addiction. Ultimately, the band's success depended on the talents of Lukather and keyboardist Steve Porcaro.

The album was an artistic departure for the band, mixing elements of gospel and jazz. The album wasn't a big hit in North America but it did well in Japan. In 1987, Toto played the Montreux Jazz Festival and continued to tour. During this time, bassist David Hungate left the band to focus on his recording and production career. Steve Lukather, a guitarist/vocalist, replaced him.
